Commodores Make Fast Work Of Cuyahoga With Sweep On Sophomore Night

October 23, 2024 - - It was another complete victory for Lorain County Community College on Wednesday evening with the Commodores logging another win, their tenth in their last eleven matches, against Cuyahoga Community College (25-14, 25-23, and 25-14).

Just a week ago, LCCC needed five sets to dispatch the Triceratops in a non-conference tilt, but on Wednesday night they got down to business early and cruised to an easy 3-0 sweep to improve to 12-6 and 8-2 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

The Commodores hit .321 as a team and two players, Teniya Jenkins and Gabriella Habeck, connected for double-digit kills.  Jenkins and Habeck both hit in the .400s and while Jenkins was doing work at the net with two solo blocks, Habeck was getting it done at the service line with a team-high four aces.

LCCC honored two sophomores prior to the contest, Ava Haddix and Nilaysia Todd.  Over two seasons with the Commodores, Todd is hitting .212 and has been a dominant force in the middle for LCCC, with 31 solo blocks and 279 kills in her LCCC career.

Haddix, an addition from Ursuline College this season, leads the OCCAC in total assists (700) and assists per set (10.29 – Almost two full assists higher than Emma Sallot of Clark State College who has 8.72 per set).  Haddix also ranks fifth in hitting percentage with .298.

Recap:

In the first game, the Commodores pulled away after the Triceratops inched to within one point, 8-7.  It started with Nilaysia Todd who blast a kill right through the Cuyahoga defense and then she assisted on a block to get the run rolling. Isabella Beck landed a service ace, a few rallies later Todd had another kill, Kaylyn Hannan got a kill, and then Ava Haddix had three aces in a row to put the Commodores up seven and in control with Tri-C calling a time out.  LCCC went on to win 25-14.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second set when, trailing 14-15, the Commodores rattled off four straight points starting with a kill from Teniya Jenkins. But Triceratops wouldn't go quietly.  With LCCC sitting on set point and leading by five, Tri-C cut the Commodore lead to one before Gabriella Habeck ended the set with kill assisted by Haddix.

LCCC hit their best in the final set. Limiting themselves to just three errors, the Commodores hit .424 and had 17 kills as a team in the clincher.  They used an 8-1 run to put distance between them and Cuyahoga and cruised to another 25-14 win.
